DENVER AWARDED NCAA WOMEN’S FINAL FOUR: NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four to be held in Denver in 2012

11/14/2008

In conjunction with the Women’s Final Four, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association conference will be held at the Denver Convention Center. Denver will realize an estimated 30 million dollars in economic development during the championship weekend.

“The NCAA Women’s Final Four tournament is a terrific event for Denver,” said Mayor John Hickenlooper. “We look forward to hosting a first-rate event and showcasing our city’s passion for sports.  We thank the NCAA for their commitment to Denver, and thank Denver Sports and the bid committee for their hard work in securing this exciting, fun tournament."

Denver
’s bid is not only focused on hosting a great championship, but also growing the sport within the region. The Championship Week will include a Women’s Final Four Leadership Academy in conjunction with USA Basketball.  The leadership academy will provide a forum for the region’s youth and high school athletes and coaches to access key NCAA influencers and coaches.

“This is a great opportunity for the Mountain West Conference to continue to grow the name and brand of our league,” said Commissioner Craig Thompson. “To be involved with both a fantastic local organizing committee and one of the best facilities in the country, bringing to this community the premier women’s college basketball event, will be one of the highlights of this conference.”

The successful Women’s Final Four bid is the result of a partnership between the Mountain West Conference as the host conference, Denver Sports, Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, The City of Denver and Pepsi Center.  The local women’s collegiate basketball community was vital to the successful bid.

The Denver Sports and Mountain West Conference’s concept for the Women’s Final Four centered on the idea of “Put It in the Hoop” and Denver’s compact, village like atmosphere. The “Hoop” is a mile (5280 ft.) radius around downtown Denver that all championship venues, events, hotels, conferences and celebrations will be held within.

Denver is an exciting, appealing city set in a dynamic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains,” said Sue Donohoe, NCAA Vice President for Division I Women’s Basketball. “We know our student-athletes, coaches and fans will enjoy spending the 2012 women’s final four in Denver.  The committee was impressed by the accessibility in downtown Denver where hotels, restaurants and the Pepsi Center are all located within a one-mile loop.  Our fans will have numerous entertainment options to choose from in the downtown area.  Denver is a first-time host for this extraordinary event and the committee felt that it had unique attributes that will provide for new and creative opportunities to enhance the event.”
