TEN CAN’T MISS EVENTS DURING THE FIFTH ANNUAL DENVER ARTS WEEK

Every November, the Mile High City shines a spotlight on its thriving arts world during Denver Arts Week (Nov. 4-12, 2011). The fifth annual, citywide event is larger than ever featuring more than 200 events (many free, or at discounted prices) at metro area galleries, museums, performing arts venues and cultural attractions. Here are ten Denver Arts Week highlights:


KNOW YOUR ARTS FIRST FRIDAY
November 4, 2011
Denver Arts Week kicks off with Know Your Arts First Friday, during which more than 100 art galleries stay open late, offering live music, art demonstrations, food and drink, and a chance to interact with artists.
· Neighborhoods such as the Golden Triangle Museum District, Art District on Santa Fe, River North Art District, Navajo Street Art District, Tennyson Street Cultural District, Downtown/LoDo, Cherry Creek North, Old South Gaylord, Old South Pearl and Belmar Block 7 will all participate.
· Many galleries will offer artwork for the special “mile high” price of $52.80 (Denver is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level - one mile high).

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUMS
November 5, 2011
Always one of Arts Week’s most popular events, 2010’s Night at the Museums event generated more than 22,500 museum visits in one evening.
· Nearly 20 of the city's museums, including the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Arts, Denver Botanic Gardens, Molly Brown House Museum, stay open until 10 p.m. for free, offering special programs, music and events. Be sure to visit Denver’s hidden gem museums participating this year, including: the Denver Firefighter Museum; Forney Museum of Transportation; Mizel Museum; Museum of Outdoor Arts; Littleton Museum; the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum; and the Golden History Museums, among others.
· Free shuttle buses carry people from one museum to another throughout the night, making it easy to "museum-hop" around the city. Not all museums are included in the shuttle route, please check the Denver Arts Week website for details.

STARZ DENVER FILM FESTIVAL

November 2-13, 2011
Experience the region’s largest celebration of cinema when the Denver Film Society lights up the city with more than 250 screenings of new films representing 47 countries around the globe – everything from the hottest indies, documentaries and foreign films to glamorous Red Carpet events. Expect to see many actors, directors and celebrities enjoying the festivities. Tickets are on sale now.
· Don’t miss Oscar® buzz film screenings including: the directorial debut from Ralph Fiennes, Coriolanus (Nov. 9); Shame with Carey Mulligan (Nov. 9); Jeff Who Lives at Home, a comedy featuring Ed Helms, Jason Segel and Susan Sarandon (Nov. 11); David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method with Viggo Mortenson and Keira Knightley (Nov. 13); We Need to Talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly (Nov. 11); and Butter with Hugh Jackman (Nov. 13).

MAYOR’S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS

Join Mayor Michael Hancock and First Lady Mary Louise Lee for an early Denver Arts Week kick-off, featuring performances by the Colorado Ballet, Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Opera Colorado. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and is free to the public.) The Mayor will recognize several individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts in the City and County of Denver, including:
· The American Indian Art Galleries at Denver Art Museum, widely considered one of the finest collections of American Indian art in the world; · Phil Bender, founder of the pioneering Pirate Gallery;
· Veronica Barela, a Denver arts advocate for more than 30 years.


UNDER THE GLASSTOP
The Galleria at the Denver Performing Arts Complex
November 6, 2011
This FREE Open House will have a circus feel with non-stop entertainment from five stages with aerial acrobats, break dancers, stilt walkers, visual artists, eclectic music, a kid’s area, food, $52.80 theater ticket packages and more, all under the complex’s gorgeous glass roof. The festivities will go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

ARTIFY YOUR BRAIN

BLACK SHEEP FRIDAY

November 4, 2011, 5-10 p.m.
Who says Denver Arts Week isn’t romantic? During MCA Denver’s off-beat Black Sheep Friday, win an instant speed date with the improv masters of Buntport Theatre in a unique – and hilarious – dating game.

CLYFFORD STILL: THE DOCUMENTARY

Get prepped for the opening of the phenomenal Clyfford Still Museum (opening Nov. 18) by catching the premiere screening of a new documentary, set to be shown on PBS later this year. The documentary features never-before-seen footage of the artist at work, in addition to interviews with friends, family and fellow artists.
· During Night at the Museums, the Clyfford Still Museum will implement a single installation for passerbys to get a “sneak peek” of one of the artist’s masterpieces, which will be spotlighted in the foyer and viewable from outside the building on the garden terrace.
· During First Friday, the Clyfford Still Museum will take to the streets of the Art District on Santa Fe for “Get your art on!”, an opportunity for passersby to collaborate on a large abstract expressionist piece of work, on display at the Center for Visual Arts.

A SHARED EXPERIENCE IN ART
RedLine
November 4-6, 2011
Ballet Nouveau Colorado comes together with RedLine to create its first co-production. RedLine’s resident artists and four choreographers will create a world premiere production that erases the boundaries between artistic mediums. This show will premiere at RedLine’s gallery to launch their annual resident artist exhibition. · There will be encore performances of this show, Nov. 11-13, at the Performing Arts Complex at Pinnacle Charter School.

Denver Pavilions
