Since the Foundation began granting scholarships in 2000, it has helped 134 Colorado students with nearly $300,000 in scholarships.

“Tourism is the second-biggest industry in Denver, creating and supporting 65,000 jobs,” states Brad Robinette, vice president of Sage Hospitality and chairman of the board of the VISIT DENVER Foundation.  “Our Foundation allows people in the travel industry to give back and help students who are just beginning their careers.  In these hard economic times, every bit helps and these scholarships can be the difference between students staying in school or being forced to drop out.”

Since 2000, the Foundation has also given $55,000 to Denver’s Road Home’s educational programming for the homeless, including $5,000 presented in 2010.  Denver’s Road Home has gained national recognition for its efforts to bring together nonprofit, business and government efforts in cooperative ways to assist in ending homelessness.  In its first four years, the program helped create more than 1,500 housing units for the homeless and aided 3,300 homeless people in finding work.  The VISIT DENVER Foundation contributions assisted in helping the homeless find work through education and training for jobs in the hospitality industry.

The Foundation funds are raised primarily from the VISIT DENVER Foundation Golf Tournament, which will be held Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Arrowhead Golf Course, and from the Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame gala, held every year in March.

“Tourism is an industry that touches everyone in the Denver Metro area, both through the high number of jobs the industry supports and in the amount of tax dollars it generates for the city and state,” Robinette said.  “Through the Foundation, the tourism industry is also able to help in education and in Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s 10-year plan to end homelessness.”
