American Indians participated in World War I as an extension of the population's ongoing efforts to shape social and political realities, resist cultural assimilation and segregation, and attain equality through service and sacrifice. Natives fought on the battlefield and the home front, and shared equally in the horrors and burdens of the time. Seventeen thousand American Indians were registered for service by war's end.
