A Woman with Eagle Powers: Sacajawea and the Memory of Her People


Many tales have been told about Sacagawea due to her presence on the famed Lewis and Clark expedition. Yet the stories told by her people (the Hidatsa of North Dakota) differ substantially from those made popular by a century's worth of scholars, novelists, artists and filmmakers. Dr. Michael Welsh shares research conducted among the Hidatsa, with comparisons of their stories to the conventional narratives and thoughts about how Fort Vasquez figures into the Sacagawea legend.
