The Bison, also known as the buffalo, is the National Mammal and an iconic animal in western history. While this stunning animal no longer roams the prairies in the large numbers that we see in historic paintings in AMWA’s collection, contemporary bison conservation is a hopeful story. Denver Zoo and other conservation partners are restoring bison herds to grasslands across the New West for ecological and public benefit.
