Phillips was so fascinated with the landscape and people of Taos, New Mexico that he chose to stay as his travel companion Ernest L. Blumenschein returned to New York. There is a lifetime’s work for twenty men.”

Artful Insights are limited to a small number of visitors so each guest can have an intimate experience with the art and Museum guide. Although his name may be unfamiliar to most, his action-packed paintings of the United States Cavalry are probably not. Schreyvogel dedicated his relatively short career to accurately and sensitively depicting the military that defended the western frontier in the years following the Civil War.

Artful Insights are limited to a small number of visitors so each guest can have an intimate experience with the art and Museum guide. Artful Insight – George De Forest Brush
Join us for this Artful Insight where we discuss George de Forest Brush’s romantic imagery and approach toward subjects. As he said himself, “in choosing Indians as subjects for art, I do not paint from the historians or the antiquary’s point of view… I am interested in those habits and deeds in which we have feelings in common.” Come explore the highly academic style of painting that Brush applied to the two paintings on display here at the Museum.

Artful Insights are limited to a small number of visitors so each guest can have an intimate experience with the art and Museum guide. Artist Talk - Kim Wiggins
Join the American Museum of Western Art in welcoming Kim Wiggins for an Artist Talk, discussing his life as an artist, his major influences, and his artwork hanging on our gallery walls! During the 1980’s Wiggins deliberately leapt from Impressionism to the Modernist style he is known for today. Wiggins’s interests and subject matter are diverse with a heavy influence from Modernism, Expressionism, American Scene, and Hispanic Folk Art. They range from Symbolism to dynamic cityscapes of New York to complex battle scenes of the historic Old West. However, his vibrant landscapes of the Southwest remain his predominant mainstay. His heartfelt passion for the American West and its vanishing way of life is translated through vivid images meant to keep the spirit of the West alive and his belief that the artist is the soul of a society drives him to chronicle elements of our own culture through the focal point of his own unique vision.
America/North_Dakota/Center

Artful Insight – William Jacob Hays
Join us for a discussion on William Jacob Hays, who traveled west in the early 1860s and captured the dramatic vistas and striking wildlife that would soon disappear. Hays was fascinated most by buffalo, also known as bison. With this fascination he studied these animals closely and spoke about them in the most beautiful way, stating “as far as the eye can reach, wild herds are discernable and yet, farther behind these bluffs, over which they pour, the throngs begins, covering sometimes the distance of a hundred miles.”

Artful Insights are limited to a small number of visitors so each guest can have an intimate experience with the art and Museum guide.
