Mile High City Welcomes Presidential History to INVESCO Field at Mile High

July 08, 2008

Mayor John Hickenlooper released the following statement on Monday, July 7, after the announcement that Barack Obama will accept the Democratic presidential nomination in front of more than 75,000 people at Invesco Field at Mile High on Thursday, August 28, 2008.

“When Denver bid on hosting the 2008 Democratic National Convention, we promoted the unique opportunities our venues and landscape could provide to create a one-of-a-kind experience,” said Mayor John Hickenlooper.  “We are delighted with Barack Obama’s desire to break new ground in Denver and literally open up an already historic event to more people than ever.  We are committed to this unprecedented vision and will work with convention planners to make the necessary logistical arrangements.”

City officials from the Mayor’s Office, Denver Police Department and Public Works Department are already working with Secret Service, the Denver Convention 2008 Host Committee, the Obama campaign and Democratic National Convention Committee to address the logistical, security and transportation-related needs around this venue change. Once details are finalized, the City will conduct community outreach to businesses and residents near both the Pepsi Center and Invesco Field at Mile High.

As with all other aspects of the Convention, the City of Denver’s intention remains to minimize any impacts on roadways, businesses and residents.  More details about access and mobility around the Pepsi Center and Invesco Field at Mile High will be available in the near future.

The City of Denver’s support for the rights of people to express their views safely and in a manner that respects the rights of others along with local, state and federal laws will obviously extend to this new venue.  Given that the City of Denver had already committed to provide a public viewing area within sight and sound of the delegates entering the Pepsi Center, a public viewing area will also be available near Invesco Field at Mile High on Thursday, August 28, and a designated public access route to that area will be provided. More details will be available as they are finalized.
