Little Man Ice Cream Lets Conventioneers Savor a Scoop of Nostalgia
August 21, 2008
DNC conventioneers seeking a break from the convention floor can rise above the hustle and bustle just a short walk from the Pepsi Center. Little Man Ice Cream, housed in a gleaming 28-foot replica of an old-fashioned milk can, offers up home-made ice cream, sorbet, gelato, and cool drinks in Denver’s historic Highland neighborhood.
The can’t-miss-it structure is just across the Highland Pedestrian Bridge that crosses I-25 on 16th Street, then one block northwest at 2620 16th Street.
The brainchild and labor of love of Realtor/Developer Paul Tamburello, Little Man Ice Cream was inspired by Tamburello’s father's love for ice cream and family activities. The whimsical 28’ tall steel building, now Denver’s newest landmark, represents an earlier generation's joy in the Sunday afternoon family outing.
As part of his commitment to service, Tamburello created a Give-Back Program for Little Man Ice Cream. His Scoop for Scoop initiative donates to local, national, and international aid programs one scoop of rice, beans, or other scoopable foodstuffs for each scoop of ice cream sold. In partnership with International Medical Relief (IMR), Little Man Ice Cream has donated 20,000 scoops to needy villages in Africa since it opened in July 2008.
Visitors to Little Man Ice Cream can stroll across the street to Hirshorn Park and tour the Sustainable Living Roadshow, a caravan of educators and entertainers touring the country in a fleet of renewable-fuel vehicles to empower communities and individuals to adopt sustainable living strategies for a healthier planet. Visiting k-12 schools, university campuses and community festivals across the US, the caravan sets up off-the-grid eco-carnivals with experiential learning villages featuring workshops, speakers and entertainment.
The Little Man Ice Cream building is a lighthearted but significant addition to the Highland neighborhood and a nostalgic bow to similar structures that have been a part of Denver’s history. Denver citizens of all ages can look back to an era when whimsy trumped utility, recalling long family road trips punctuated by the appearance on the horizon of a huge ice cream cone, three-story dinosaur, or giant shoe too odd to resist. In less than two months, Little Man Ice Cream has become such an attraction for all of Denver, a place where young and old, sophisticates and innocents alike gather for a tasty trip down memory lane. http://www.littlemanicecream.com/
