The featured film this evening is Slumdog Millionaire, directed by British auteur Danny Boyle, best know for his groundbreaking Trainspotting and 28 Days Later. The film follows the adventures of Jamal (Dev Patel), a teenager who was orphaned as a young boy and left to fend for himself in the slums of Mumbai. He has become a celebrity by competing on the Indian equivalent of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, where his ace performance has earned him the passionate devotion of the audience—and the suspicion of the authorities. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., you can meet Tom and hear about his new book, Showtime, which traces Denver’s love affair with theatre, dance, opera, music and conventions back to its gold-rush origins. This historical account details the events that transformed a rough-and-tumble Western town into one of the nation’s foremost performing arts destinations. With five-hundred illustrations and a sweeping narrative, Showtime chronicles the first 150 years of Colorado’s cultural landscape.
