Celebrating Denver’s First Spouses With New Cableland Exhibit

One thing we learned at Cableland Home Foundation’s First Spouses Recognition reception? Being a Denver Mayoral First Lady ain’t all glitz and glam. Instead, it’s a combination of hard work, a demanding schedule, providing constant, positive support for the mayor…and sometimes being on the receiving end of rude, unkind comments from the public. One thing we were impressed by? The unveiling of the sparkling new First Spouses Wall, a tribute to all of Denver’s First Ladies—with room for future First Gentlemen as well. The installation is made up of a plaque, biography and photo of each of the 42 Denver Mayoral Spouses. Smiling First Lady Mary Louise Lee was front and center to see her vision come to fruition.

THE DENVER MAYORS WALK OF HISTORY

The City of Denver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush when General William Larimer, a land speculator from eastern Kansas, staked a claim on the bluff overlooking the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. He named the quickly growing settlement Denver City to curry favor with Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. The Colorado Territory was created on February 28, 1861 and Denver City was incorporated on November 7, 1861. Six years later, Denver City became the Territorial Capital. With its newfound importance, Denver City shortened its name to Denver. Then, on August 1, 1876, Colorado was admitted to the Union. John C. Moore was the first Denver mayor from 1859 to 1861. Since then, Denver’s mayors have provided vision and leadership enabling transformation of the “Mile High City” from a frontier town into a world-class metropolitan hub with a diverse population, healthy economy and highly desirable lifestyle.

ABOUT BILL DANIELS

A man dedicated to making life better… one person at a time.

Bill Daniels was one of those remarkable individuals who achieved success through a combination of perseverance and good fortune.

Born in Greeley, Colorado in 1920, Bill lived with his family in Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa as a child. The family moved to Hobbs, New Mexico when Bill was a teenager, and he attended the New Mexico Military Institute in nearby Roswell. As a young man, he was an undefeated Golden Gloves Champion of New Mexico.

In World War II and the Korean conflict, Bill was a naval fighter pilot who retired as Full Commander in the U.S. Navy. After the Navy, he encountered television, was amazed by the technology, and learned many remote cities and towns did not have access to it. He started his first cable business in Casper, Wyoming in 1953.

As one of the pioneers in cable television, Bill went on to own and operate hundreds of cable TV systems across the country. The firm he founded, Daniels & Associates, is nationally recognized as a leading provider of investment banking services to media and technology companies. His leadership helped bring numerous hi-tech and communications companies to the Front Range.

“When you put your life in perspective, you realize how little time there is to make something truly significant out of it. To some people this might mean acquiring a lot of possessions, building a business or owning property. There’s nothing wrong with these aspirations, but for me, they pale in comparison to individuals who want to leave something more consequential as their legacy.” - Bill Daniels
