Rocky Mountain Showdown History
The Rocky Mountain Showdown – a college football rivalry that stretches back 120 years! The first “showdown” between the University of Colorado Buffaloes and the Colorado State Rams took place all the way back in February of 1893. Yes, football existed then.
The event was discontinued for a quarter century from 1958 to 1983, but it’s been back and stronger than ever as an eagerly anticipated annual event since. Starting in 1998, the game has usually been played in the home of the Denver Broncos, Sports Authority Field at Mile High – neutral ground for both teams, and a spot with a capacity big enough to accommodate both teams’ devoted fanbase.
