Genghis Khan (1162–1227, AD) was the ruler of the largest contiguous land empire the world has ever seen. His military legacy endured for centuries, and some of his civic improvements are still in use today. Time Magazine named Genghis Khan “the most important person of the last millennium.” The Genghis Khan exhibit at the DMNS tells the fascinating story of how this extraordinary man from a remote corner of Asia created an empire that led the world into the modern age.

Visitors will experience life in 13th-century Mongolia, entering the tents, battlegrounds, and marketplaces of a vanished world. Explore Genghis Khan’s life and those of his sons and grandsons during the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire, viewing rare artifacts along the way.

The journey begins in the newly renovated 14,000-square-foot Phipps Special Exhibits Gallery, where visitors encounter a colossal bronze statue of Genghis Khan seated on his throne. From there, wander through a vivid re-creation of the daily life of a nomad on the grassland of Central Asia. See ornate weaponry, armor, and objects depicting the equestrian culture of Mongolia and marvel at a Mongol warrior on horseback, complete with leather armor, saddle, and weapons. The exhibit highlights the complex military strategies of the Mongolian army, featuring a video re-creation of armies attacking walled cities, large models of Mongol siege weapons, and an animated electronic floor map that shows the dramatic expansion of Genghis Khan’s empire.

Next, visit the walled, cosmopolitan city of Karakorum, which became the empire’s capital during the reign of Ögödei, Genghis Khan’s third son and successor. The ancient city comes to life with cultural performances by traditional Mongolian singers and musicians.

Finally, discover the Mongolian culture of the 21st century and see how aspects of their distinctive horse-based culture still survive eight centuries after Genghis Khan. Learn about Denver’s thriving Mongolian population, which has grown to more than 2,500 people over the past 20 years.

Note: The Museum and Genghis Khan exhibition are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry at 4 p.m. Both are closed on December 25.
