Trendspotting with Renee Mudd:
A Denver Photographer/Blogger Documents the Mile High City's Street Style
As you explore Denver, you’ll find that the Mile High City has got style in abundance. From classic looks to innovative mixes, Denverites are wearing their clothes well these days. Local photographer Renee Mudd (enigmatically pictured above) noticed the city’s stylish ways and has given herself the task of documenting Denver “street style” on her fun blog http://the-intersection.blogspot.com. The frequently updated website features photos of residents sporting the coolest outfits and accessories. It’s a handy way to see what the city’s diverse style is, and to get ideas for your own wardrobe. Denver.org chatted with Renee about the Denver’s sense of style.
Denver.org: What was your inspiration for starting the-intersection?
Renee Mudd: The-intersection began as a simple pet project blending my love for fashion and people watching. I’m truly fascinated with how people dress on a daily basis and why they choose the items they do. I also wanted to give the city of Denver a little fashion inspiration from everyday people, something to tell them, “It’s okay, have fun with your wardrobe, get out there and show the city what you’ve got!”
Denver.org: What sorts of things catch your eye when you’re out on the street? What makes you think: “That has to go on the blog!”?
RM: All it takes is a second look. I’m constantly giving people the double take, which often frightens a few people, but if the look is something new, inventive or even well tailored & classic, it’s worth photographing.
Denver.org: How do you approach people who you want to photograph for the blog? What kind of responses do you get?
RM: Blogging is still a pretty new thing in Denver, so a lot of people are a bit apprehensive at first. The idea of a stranger posting their photo on the Internet can be a little scary. But for the most part people are intrigued and very supportive.
Denver.org: How would you describe Denver’s fashion sense?
RM: Unlike New York and L.A., it takes months, even years for Denver to find out about the latest trends. So I could say that we’re a bit behind the times, but thanks to the Internet we finally have access to the latest fashions. In all honesty, Denver is a transit city with people from all over the country, so I like to believe we’re a good blend of new and old.
Denver.org: Where are the best spots in the city for stylish people-watching?
RM: I don’t necessarily think there are any particular spots where the more “stylish” tend to flock, each neighborhood holds it own stylish people. Capitol Hill (pictured right) is where you’ll find your adventurous hipsters, Downtown hosts more business men & women, etc ... If you look hard enough you’ll find them around every corner.
Denver.org: How would you describe your own fashion sense?
RM: Ever since I can remember my own style has changed with the seasons. Today, I like anything that keeps me cool in this summer heat. Light tops and dresses usually paired with a dramatic sandal. But truth be told, this could all change come fall. The one thing that stays constant in every aspect of my wardrobe: neutral colors. I have red hair so I like to let it be the star and keep my outfit monochromatic.
Denver.org: Where are some of your favorite places to go shopping for clothes and accessories? Are there any hidden gems that you love?
RM: Larimer Square is a great place to shop for the latest trends, Square 1 and Loft 22. I’m a true believer in mixing and matching high end items with thrift store finds. Some of my favorite spots, ARC and Goodwill on South Broadway!
