Microbreweries. More beer is brewed in Denver than in any other city in the country. Accordingly there are several microbreweries and brewpubs in the area that any self-respecting beer connoisseur simply must visit. Writer Irene Middleman Thomas has bellied up to the bar at all of them, and she shares her favorites in this TENver.

  • Breckenridge Brewery

    303 297-3644

    Located just across the street from Coors Field, this is a microbrewery that serves food – and, of course, beer. Eleven brews are on tap, along with guest beers and occasional seasonals, along with good-for-you healthy food and the typical pub food. Open daily. Samplers of six, four-ounce different beers go for just $8.

  • Cheeky Monk Belgian Beer Café

    A relative newcomer on the trendy Colfax strip, Cheeky Monk is a Eurobar with the expected edgy ambience and an outstanding beer menu, along with suggestions for food pairings. Thirty imported brews are offered, with daily happy hour specials along with $4 plates of frites and aioli – now what could go better with Belgians than THAT?

  • The Denver Chophouse & Brewery

    Housed in a beautifully restored historic building just across from Coors Field, the Chophouse offers outdoor decks, live music, fine dining, and one of the city’s most popular clubs, Sing Sing, featuring dueling pianos. Eight craft beers on tap, including such as a premium mild, pale ale; honey wheat; nut brown ale; oatmeal stout and extra special bitter. Cuisine ranges from burgers to filet mignon – anyone’s tastes will be satisfied here.

  • Falling Rock Tap House

    One of the coolest places in our city – the Falling Rock is a sight to see. With over 70 beers on tap from all over the world, daily changes and seasonals, not to mention some of the beer-savviest bartenders around, this spot offers hearty beer-friendly chow as well as regular beer pairing dinners. With very upscale cuisine in an incongruous, but friendly, rustic setting, this is THE place for beer connoisseurs.

  • Great Divide Brewing Company

    The Great Divide’s traditional Tap Room offers eight Great Divide beers on tap and others in bottles. You’ll also find occasional Tap Room-only releases that are not available anywhere else. Located in the heart of Denver’s microbrew district near LoDo, several of the neighborhood’s excellent eateries will deliver food to the Tap Room to enjoy with your brews.

  • Great Northern Tavern

    This is the cozy, relaxed pub dining scene you’ve been seeking, right in the Tech Center. Sit in the bar area for munchies or head over to the dining area for upscale (and downscale) grub matched with some of the best micros around. Great Northern also hosts about three beer pairing events each year. Daily, sixteen micros are on tap. Happy hours are offered seven days a week, from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., offering $5 appetizers and $2.50 drafts.

  • My Brother’s Bar

    The place is known and loved for its outstanding burgers and Bloody Mary’s, its exceptionally pretty patio and its unusual (and refreshing) classical music – but it’s also stellar for its microbrew and import selection: a whopping seventeen on tap. Bonus – it’s kid-friendly and within walking distance to Coors Field.

  • Rock Bottom Brewery

    Located on the 16th Street Mall, this Rock Bottom Brewery was the first of what is now a national chain, and one of three in the Denver area. It has one of the city’s largest outdoor cafes (super people watching on the mall!) and frequently features jazz groups on an elevated stage area above the brewing kettles. Check out their Red Rocks Ale; Molly’s Titanic Brown Ale, Black Diamond Stout, and Rockies Premium Draft! Multi-course ‘Chef and Brewers’ Dinners’ are held at all three Denver-area locations with various schedules.

  • Wazee Supper Club

    With more than 10 micros offered on tap daily, the Wazee is a much-loved oldie-but-very-goodie downtown spot. Many Denverites swear that the Wazee’s pizza is the only way to go, but their burgers and sandwiches are can’t-misses too. You’ll fit in here just like the locals do.

  • Wynkoop Brewing Company

    303 297-2700

    Located in a turn-of-the-century historic building across the street from Union Station, the Wynkoop was Colorado’s first brewpub and now produces more beer than any other brewpub in the U.S. The 34,000-square-foot pub has a comedy club and a huge, upscale pool hall, as well as an excellent restaurant. Specialty beers often available include: Elvis Brau, Pattie’s Chili Beer (made with green chili peppers) and Splatz Porter, named after the pub cat. The Wynkoop was founded by Denver’s former Mayor (now Colorado Governor), John Hickenlooper.
