The study was based on citizen polls conducted by RMJM Hillier. The cities surveyed were ranked by 10 criteria, including architectural awards, public transit  and sustainable, eco-friendly design.

The winning markets were: Chicago, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Denver's architectural status has grown considerably in recent years, with the addition of the Daniel Libeskind-designed Hamilton Building at the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by David Adjaye and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold regional headquarters in lower Downtown, not to mention countless other projects.
