Winding through beautiful mountain vistas on a historic narrow-gauge train and sampling amazing craft beer is classic Colorado. Dating back to 1881, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is offering new Summer Brew Train excursions on Saturdays from June 15-Aug. 10, 2019.

The Brew Train gets hopping at 11 a.m. from D&SNGRR’s Rockwood Station, located 20 minutes from downtown Durango. While enjoying the hour-long train ride to Cascade Canyon, Colorado craft brewers will introduce guests to a light sampling of their beers and share the process used to make each one. While stopping to relax in Cascade Canyon for 1.5 hours, enjoy lunch, live music and more delicious Colorado brews. Dessert and coffee are on tap during the return trip to Rockwood Station. It’s a great way to spend part of a day and still have plenty of time to explore, shop and visit other attractions after disembarking at 2:30 p.m.

A rich history

Established as the Denver & Rio Grande Railway, D&SNGRR has been transporting passengers through the remote, scenic wilderness and high-mountain landscape of the San Juan National Forest since 1881. Now owned and operated by American Heritage Railways, the Durango-based train provides distinctive year-round rail experiences via its fleet of vintage coal-fired, steam-operated locomotives (most dating back to 1923-25), historic diesel-powered locomotives, and coaches that have been updated with modern conveniences. In addition, D&SNGRR manages a fascinating museum at the train depot in Durango that chronicles the colorful history of railroading, transportation and mining in the Durango/Silverton area. Museum admission is free and open to the public on all days that the train operates.

Traveling from Denver

From Denver, it’s only a short flight to Durango or 330-mile drive along two of the state’s most scenic roadways, Highways 285 and 160, with towns like Fairplay, Buena Vista, Salida, South Fork and Pagosa Springs to visit along the way. Get out and explore southwest Colorado by train!
