After Hours: VIKING RELIGION AND CHRISTIANITY

Aug 10, 2017

Folklorist Thomas DuBois unravels the history of Nordic religions from the Viking Age and shows how these ancient beliefs and their oral traditions incorporated both local and foreign influences.

DuBois examines Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and Mediterranean traditions and has found Nordic parallels in concepts of supernatural beings, cults of the dead, beliefs in ghosts, and magical practices. These views were actively held alongside Christianity for many years. DuBois is the Halls-Bascom professor of Scandinavian studies, folklore, and religious studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of Nordic Religions in the Viking Age.
