Dynamic Variation:

Arts in the Afternoon: The Classical Bass

Nov 10, 2021

The double-bass doesn’t always play back-up: sometimes, it gets a leading role. In this program of chamber works, the bass appears center stage. A quintet led by Phillip Stevens with strings and piano wouldn’t usually require a bass, but Schubert’s beloved “Trout” Quintet does. By the way, there’s nothing ‘fishy’ about the music, other than the song from which Schubert borrows a melody. In all, it’s a program of music narrated by Betsy Schwarm that makes the most of lower-pitched instruments, with lots of beautiful melodies along the way.

Arts in the Afternoon is a monthly hour-long program that usually takes place once a month on a Wednesday afternoon at 1:30pm. The series features some of the finest classical, jazz, opera, and other musicians from the metro Denver area. Each show includes a significant educational component, with the professional musicians or their narrators sharing historical and artistic insights about the music they play. During our in-person performances, you can enjoy complimentary refreshments and conversation with artists after each performance.
