This is designed for the recreational traveler who has little or no experience using a GPS and/or GPS owners who would like to gain a greater understanding of their receivers. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and using a handheld GPS unit.
Topics include: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), how it works, GPS functions and limitations including GPS setup for maximum utility, GPSs in your hand and in your car, collecting and managing waypoints and tracks, creating routes, use of GPSs with U.S.G.S. and other topographic maps, and computer applications for GPS data management and display. All materials are provided, and a few GPS receivers will be available for loan. An understanding of U.S.G.S. topographic maps is helpful, but is not required. An optional exercise in Rocky Mountain National Park will be conducted in the afternoon, depending upon weather and level of interest.
By the end of this event participants will have the knowledge to navigate in the backcountry with greater confidence.
