First Friday - Emilio Lobato: Retro-Spectacle
Nov 2, 2018
This Fall the William Havu Gallery presents Retro-Spectacle, a 25 year retrospective of prints and paintings by Emilio Lobato. Emilio Lobato’s representation with the gallery goes back to the mid 1990’s when it was 1/1 A Gallery on Wazee Street, but his first show with the gallery was the inaugural exhibition at the then, brand new William Havu Gallery in the fall of 1998. Over the past twenty years, William Havu Gallery has presented over ten solos for Lobato, and included his work in numerous two-person and group exhibits. In 2011 The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center presented Lobato’s work in a solo show titled, Mi Linda Soledad. Not only is Emilio Lobato an important piece to the history of this gallery, but he’s made his mark on Colorado’s art landscape as well.
“In the fall of 1998 the William Havu Gallery opened with an inaugural show in the new space at 1040 Cherokee Street, the first space designed and conceived as a contemporary art gallery in Denver. That inaugural exhibition was a triad of solo shows titled, “Full Circle”. I was very proud to be one of that trio. Twenty years later I am still proud to be represented by the William Havu Gallery. Over the past two decades the William Havu Gallery has given me ten solo shows and has included me in numerous group shows.
To celebrate this milestone we’ve selected works from my archive, some featured in that inaugural show. Additionally we’ve selected works from many of my subsequent exhibitions. For over 20 years I’ve explored many themes and ideas. A consistent intention has been my desire to examine an internal landscape. For practically my entire career I’ve been captivated with the “peaks and valleys” that constitute human emotion.
Congratulations, William Havu Gallery! With gratitude and affection.
Full Circle indeed!”
