Steve Denny is an active pianist and educator and was recently selected as one of five finalists for the prestigious 2012 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. He holds a BA in music from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. During his time at Loyola, Steven earned a Performance Award for his senior recital and received departmental honors as an Outstanding Music Major. Steve Denny PhotoWhile at UNC, he was a Graduate Assistant with the Jazz Studies Department and a member of UNC Jazz Lab Band I, one of the top collegiate big bands in the country. In 2008, UNC’s Lab I was awarded “Outstanding Achievement by a Collegiate Big Band” by Downbeat Magazine.
The Steve Denny Trio originated from the bucolic fields of Greeley, Colorado where three University of Northern Colorado jazz students found a common creative bond playing unabashedly straight-forward and swinging music with a heartfelt sensibility and modern edge. The trio’s musical purview includes original music and jazz standards creatively arranged to pay homage to the great musicians and music of the past. The group is committed to honoring the timeless music from the vast jazz lexicon and to the ongoing evolution and growth of the art form. The SD trio performs regularly along the front range and has collaborated with many notable musicians including vocalist Lisa Engelken,
