The Modern Nude: Contemporary Art of the Human Form

February 20th, 2021 - April 17th 2021

Featured artists: Deron DeCesare, Destiny Bowman, Pearl Whitecrow, Andrés Alfonso, Steven Morrell, and Jeffrey Harrison. "The Modern Nude" exhibits the complementary and contrasting styles of this cadre of artists focused on one of art's oldest and most timeless themes: The nude human form.

From Artemesia owner, director, and artist, Jeffrey Harrison: "With our opening exhibition we are looking to explore the timeless theme of the nude human form in the context of the contemporary world. All six artists owe some inspiration to realism and classical figurative methods, but each painter brings their own unique alchemy of contemporary ideas and techniques to bear in their work."

The human form has been celebrated in all shapes, sizes, colors, and races from pre-history female fertility statues to the idealized marble sculptures of the ancient Greek anthropomorphic gods and goddesses to Michelango's masterful glorification of the male form during the High Renaissance. In nearly every era and culture, all the way up to the present day, artists always seem to find a way to bring the nude into context and relevance. In the modern era, the nude as an art subject has been reinterpreted, derided, deconstructed, and reimagined.
