Virtual Lecture: Fashion is a Show

Feb 2, 2021

Explore the role fashion plays in our lives as a system that has been built through the centuries from the Renaissance and as an outlet that allows each person to construct their identity.

This lecture will retrace the history of fashion from its aristocratic origins to today's streetwear seen on social media.

Originally, fashion was used by kings, queens, and courtiers as a symbolic affirmation of their power. By the 19th century, fashion became more popular as couturiers took over the staging of fashion. Fashion started showing up in magazines and fashion shows and was even exhibited as art during the first Worlds Fairs.

Just as costumes are essential for actors to embody their character on stage, fashion offers a way for everyone to express their role and identity in society.
