A Daughter’s Eye/A Daughter’s Voice
Curated by the younger of Clyfford Still’s two daughters, Sandra Still Campbell, A Daughter’s Eye/A Daughter’s Voice presents a highly personal and original vision of Still’s art and ideas. Two-thirds of the featured works have never been exhibited, and many have been unrolled and stretched for the first time since Still painted them. Campbell’s reflections about her father, his art, and their life together accompany the paintings, and are presented both in wall texts and a podcast. Her audio commentary unfolds in four chapters, one for each of the exhibition’s galleries.

Born in 1942, Campbell became increasingly active in Still’s career beginning in the early 1960s, when the Still family began their inventory process and documentation of Still’s life’s work. Campbell lived in the Still household on and off between 1962 and 1971. Such deep immersion in Still’s ideas and practices allows Campbell to make uncanny connections between seemingly unrelated works, such as a 1949 canvas created in San Francisco, PH-385, and a 1973 painting created in Maryland, PH-1034.
1250 Bannock St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Film/Still: Undomesticated
With artist, Ana María Hernando and director, Amie Knox in person!

Join us for a special film/Still screening presented in collaboration with Museo de Las Americas, followed by a conversation with Ana María Hernando, editor/co-director Chad Herschberger, and producer/co-director Amie Knox.

Argentine born, Boulder based artist Ana María Hernando lives a life inhabited by color, textiles, flowers, and a deep regard for women’s traditional crafts. Undomesticated attempts to capture her essence and intuitive process as she creates one of her memorable installations. Incorporating hand-crocheted petticoats of Andean villagers and delicate fabrics embroidered by a group of cloistered nuns in Buenos Aires, Ana María creates a wondrous work which is both a testament to traditional crafts as well as an exuberant piece of art.
4255 W Colfax Ave. Denver , CO America/North_Dakota/Center

A Daughter’s Eye: Sandra Still Campbell in Conversation
Sandra Still Campbell, daughter of Clyfford Still and curator of A Daughter’s Eye, A Daughter’s Voice

A Daughter’s Eye/A Daughter’s Voice, on view through January 23, 2019, presents a rare opportunity to see Still’s work from the perspective of someone who knew him on a close personal level and was able to experience the creation of his art almost simultaneously with the artist over the course of many years. According to Campbell, “my father fought against making his work inhuman—sterile, cold, lacking in humanity. He was all about the fire of the human spirit.” In this conversation, moderated by CSM director Dean Sobel, Campbell will illuminate key themes in the exhibition, providing rare insights into her father’s life and work.

*Registration required
1250 Bannock St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami
The Museum partners with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to present groundbreaking films that address an array of themes about art and the human experience.

Larger than life, wild, scary, and androgynous: Grace Jones plays all of these parts. Viewers of Bloodlight and Bami also discover Jones as a lover, daughter, mother, sister, and grandmother. The film weaves the layers of Jones’s public and private life as she moves effortlessly among different facets. In Jamaican patois, “Bloodlight” is the red light that illuminates when an artist is recording; “Bami” means bread, the substance of daily life.
4255 West Colfax Avenue Denver , CO America/North_Dakota/Center
