The Bad Plus
The Bad Plus came together at the end of the 20th century and has avoided easy categorization ever since, winning critical hosannas and a legion of fans worldwide with their creativity, unique sound and flair for live performance. The intensely collaborative trio has constantly searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

The band consists of founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) and new member Orrin Evans (piano) — a group of passionate collaborators with no single “leader.” Never Stop II is the first full-length release from this lineup, comprised entirely of original music with each member contributing fresh compositions. The New York Times calls it “an exhilarating document” that sparks an exciting new chapter for the iconic group.
1512 Curtis Street Denver, ID America/North_Dakota/Center

Freddy Cole Quartet: “A Centennial Tribute to Nat King Cole”
This February, the Freddy Cole Quartet will pay homage to what would have Nat King Cole’s 100th birthday.

Freddy Cole grew up in a musical family. His mother taught music to him and his older siblings. Cole’s older brother was Nat “King” Cole, who was 14 years older than Freddy. Cole is 86 now and he’s playing a tribute to the musical legacy of his older brother. Cole, a jazz pianist and vocalist, has had an astounding career, independent of his more famous brother. Cole attended Juilliard and the New England Conservatory. The idea of love’s power is something that runs through a lot of the songs Cole sings. He’s a believer that the world can always use a little more love and romance, and that these sophisticated songs are an excellent way to encourage it. He’s humble, mellow and soulful, a true entertainer. His smooth, conversational vocal style is — as with many of the greats — a thing that appears and sounds effortless, but is the product of a lifetime of mastery.
1512 Curtis Street Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Tom Harrell Quartet
“A supreme trumpet/flugelhorn player, Tom Harrell has an endless flow of bubbling, intricate ideas conveyed with an almost serene delivery. His equal ability as a formidable post-bop composer remains in full flower on this melodic, sharply conceived music. From dangerous tear-ups (Storm Approaching) to near abstract (Study in Sound) to conventional balladry (Roman Nights), Harrell is a master.” -Mojo Magazine

Praised by Newsweek for his pure melodic genius, Tom Harrell is widely recognized as one of the most creative and dynamic jazz instrumentalists and composers of our time. While Harrell is a master of the jazz idiom, he constantly seeks new challenges and influences. He has written scores and arrangements for ballet and symphony and chamber orchestras. Even with a discography of over 280 recordings and a career that spans more than five decades, Harrell has managed to stay fresh and current as he continues to actively record and tour around the world. Harrell all but transcends musical labels. His music runs the gamut from the modal and melodic to uncommon modernisms that sonically broach the film soundtrack and/or the avant-garde. He is a frequent winner in DownBeat and JazzTimes magazines’ Critics and Readers Polls and a multiple Grammy nominee.
1512 Curtis Street Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini
Trombonist and singer/songwriter Natalie Cressman and composer, guitarist, and singer Ian Faquini present their new duo project, drawing from impressionism, jazz, and the great Brazilian songwriting tradition to create a uniquely intimate collaboration.

The duo’s global take on music is largely expressed through the distinct compositional voice of Faquini, with occasional lyrics penned by Cressman. Their original material features songs in three different languages and encompasses a vast spectrum of musical ground. With the warm instrumentation of acoustic guitar and trombone and two-part vocal harmonies hugging the Brazilian-accented Portuguese, Cressman & Faquini weave their musical voices together to create a fully orchestrated sound befitting a much larger ensemble.
1512 Curtis Street Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Kurt Rosenwinkel Standards Trio
“One of the most widely applauded guitarists of the under-50 generation” (Chicago Tribune), Kurt Rosenwinkel presents a revised edition of his standards trio featuring Italian bass virtuoso Dario Deidda and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, performing material from his 2009 Word of Mouth album Reflections and new settings of timeless classics.

Kurt Rosenwinkel (born October 28, 1970) is an American jazz guitarist and keyboardist who came to prominence in the 1990s. With a career spanning almost twenty-five years, collaborating with dynamic peers like Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, Mark Turner, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter; and esteemed jazz elders like Joe Henderson, Paul Motian and Gary Burton, Rosenwinkel’s indelible mark in music is the consummation of being steeped in the rich and deep traditions of jazz, springing off of the shoulders of such vital underpinnings to elevate his own art to new heights, evolving the language in a way no other guitarist has since his arrival.
1512 Curtis Street Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center
