What other animals can you create out of branch-like blocks?

Pick up a pair of binoculars and be the first to spot different birds in a colorful flock. Play alone, or challenge a friend.

Mix-and-match ears, wings, stripes, and tails to create unique animals. Use your imagination to bring these new creatures to life. How might they move, sound, or behave?

Put together a shadowbox to display all your favorite animals. EYES ON
Xiaoze Xie has a lifelong passion for books. In his worldview, books are conveyers of prestige and signifiers of collective cultural knowledge: repositories of historical meaning, cultural conflict, and political strife. For Eyes On: Xiaoze Xie, the artist has created still-life paintings of books, videos, and installations based on banned and forbidden books in China.

Born in a small town in Guangdong Province, China, at the beginning of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in 1966, Xie now splits his time between studios in Beijing and Palo Alto, California, where he is the Paul L. & Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University.

With Eyes On: Xiaoze Xie, the Denver Art Museum initiates a series of exhibitions featuring contemporary artists who we believe should have fuller exposure to our audiences. Watch for new Eyes On rotations every six months in the Logan Gallery and Fuse Box in the Hamilton Building’s fourth floor.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

GANESHA THE PLAYFUL PROTECTOR
Ganesha: The Playful Protector is developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, which is loaning a statue of Ganesha created in the 600s to 700s that is the centerpiece of the exhibition.

The 29-inch tall cross-legged figure, featuring human arms and an elephant head, is known as one of the earliest Ganesha icons in mainland Southeast Asia. This significant pre-Angkor artwork is on view along with sculptures, paintings, and textiles from the DAM’s own collection of ancient to modern representations of the Hindu deity.

Ganesha, who has been widely worshiped since the 400s, originated in India as a Hindu god who removes obstacles and is known for granting wealth and success. Ganesha has crossed both geographic and religious boundaries, inspiring numerous representations throughout the Asian subcontinent over time—all of which will be surveyed in the exhibition to showcase the iconographic changes of this popular god.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Jeffrey Gibson - Like A Hammer
Jeffrey Gibson: Like a Hammer—the first major museum exhibition of the artist’s work—will chronicle a pivotal moment in Gibson’s career when his contemporary artistic practice converged with his Native American heritage. About 65 objects created from 2011 to the present will be featured including figurative works, text-based wall hangings, a significant selection of beaded punching bags, painted works on rawhide and canvas, and video.

The exhibition will show how Gibson draws upon his heritage and remixes his older works to create a visual vocabulary that explores his multi-faceted identity and the history of modernism. Gibson’s abstract works take inspiration from his Choctaw and Cherokee heritage, pan-Native American visual culture, alternative subcultures, and the artist’s experiences living abroad as well as popular culture. Striking patterned and textured works will incorporate text from poems, Gibson’s own voice, and song lyrics such as Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke.”
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. NEW TERRITORY LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY
New Territory: Landscape Photography Today is a survey of contemporary landscape photography from around the world. The exhibition of more than 80 photographs will gauge how artists stretch the boundaries of traditional landscape photography to reflect the environmental attitudes, perceptions, and values of our time.

The works revive historic photographic processes as well as use innovative techniques and unconventional equipment and chemistry to depict landscapes in surprising ways. Taken individually and as a whole, the photographs will show how nearly 40 artists have manipulated materials and processes for expressive purposes, blurring the distinction between "observed" and "constructed" imagery. The exhibition challenges us to see photography differently, and contemplate our complex relationship with the landscape.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker
The Denver Art Museum will be the sole venue for Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker, which will showcase more than 100 prints, drawings, and paintings from Rembrandt van Rijn’s career spanning from 1625 to 1665.

Unforgettable images of biblical, portrait, allegory, still life, landscape, and genre artworks of the time demonstrate the mastery that cemented Rembrandt as one of the greatest artists in history. The exhibition will show how Rembrandt used his view of the world around him to fuel his artistic journey, and will give a deeper understanding of his working habits as an artist, and moreover, as a printmaker.

The exhibition will take a close look at Rembrandt’s innovative approach to printmaking that combined the three principle methods of intaglio, including etching, drypoint and engraving. New scholarship about the artist will be presented, revealing how Rembrandt intentionally varied the states of his prints, ink, and exotic papers to create rarities that he knew his clients desired, demonstrating how he deliberately manipulated his prints for marketing and storytelling purposes.

An exhibition catalog will be available in The Shop and online in the fall of 2018.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy.
