The Incubation Effect
Inspired by the natural world, Denver artist Nicole Anona Banowetz has created a larger than life, immersive insect nursery made from sewn inflatable sculptures and assembled forms. She says, "Forget that the work is art for a moment and have the sort of pure interaction you would have in nature."

Walk amongst the cocoons and larva as you would in nature. Immerse yourself, be curious, and contribute to the life cycle of the nursery by designing your own creature. Come back to see the installation evolve over the course of the year.

Fun for kids and adults alike, The Incubation Effect is included in general admission, free for members and kids age 18 and younger.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Daniel Libeskind: Edge of Order – Lecture & Book Signing
In this talk, architect Daniel Libeskind opens the door to his unique creative process and his methods for discovering new directions in his work. He will share the stories behind his most important projects and his unlikely rise from a child born to Holocaust survivors in a Polish homeless shelter, to a teenager in the Bronx, to an avant-garde academic still shapes his boundary-pushing work at Studio Libeskind.

Libeskind is the founder and principal of Studio Daniel Libeskind in New York City, and an international figure in architecture and urban design. World-renowned for his provocative proposals, he has emerged as the creative force behind innovative landmarks such as the Denver Art Museum's Hamilton Building, the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Royal Ontario Museum s Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, and New York's World Trade Center master plan.

Libeskind has also become one of architecture's most public ambassadors, guided by a simple yet radical belief: that with an open mind, everyone is capable not only of understanding architecture but also designing it. He believes there are countless lessons to be shared between architecture and other creative pursuits, including music, visual art, and literature.

A book signing of Libeskind's new book "Edge of Order" will follow the lecture. "Edge of Order" will be available for purchase in The Shop.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Dior and his Decorators
Renowned design historian Maureen Footer will share insights from her recently published book, Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look.

The first in-depth account of the two Parisian interior designers associated with Christian Dior, the book recounts the evolution of Dior’s aesthetic as a fashion revolutionary and an aficionado of interior design via his personal residences, his couture house, and the Dior brand.

Simultaneously, the story examines the intimate connection of couture and interiors, chronicling the glamorous new style of interior design that emerged in Paris in parallel with the New Look. Mining previously unexplored sources and with full access to Dior archives, Footer follows the lives and work of this influential trio.

Dior tapped Victor Grandpierre, a photojournalist, to design his first couture house at 30, avenue Montaigne. Grandpierre created not only the chic, elegantly restrained look of Dior’s salons, but also the template for the Dior brand itself—including typeface, logo, signage, and packaging—still followed to this day.

Georges Geffroy, a a former stylist at Patou and connoisseur of eighteenth-century antiques, indelibly impacted Dior's career and interiors as well.

The enduring chic of these three men—what keeps them from being mere time-capsule stylists—is rooted in their ability to fuse postwar reality and eighteenth-century inspiration in their creation of contemporary solutions.

Dior and His Decorators reminds us to this day that the past—modified, preserved, but never embalmed—is a resource to enhance the everyday.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Serious Play
Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America presents the concept of playfulness in postwar American design as a catalyst for creativity and innovation. This exhibition will explore how employing playfulness allowed designers to bring fresh ideas to the American home, children’s toys and play spaces, and corporate identities.

During the 1950s and ’60s, a number of factors came together to make this bold design innovation possible. Diverse materials and manufacturing techniques opened up possibilities for new approaches to design and larger-scale production. Larger disposable income and leisure time of a growing middle class offered more possibilities for designers to help Americans discover a new way of living at home through thoughtfully designed objects. An emerging focus on child development prompted an interest in children’s furniture and placed a fresh emphasis on the importance of smart toy design. Pervasive Cold War anxiety created a desire to bring positivity and escapism into everyday spaces. Architects and designers that took advantage of all these new opportunities thrived.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

The Light Show
The Light Show at the Denver Art Museum explores physical and symbolic representations of light in art through a thought-provoking narrative. The exhibition features about 250 objects drawn from the DAM's nine curatorial departments. The Light Show focuses on the quest by humanity and artists to understand physical light in the natural world as well as metaphorical, spiritual, and divine representations of light.

The Light Show will open in two stages. The first stage—focused on physical light—will open May 19, while the second stage, presenting symbolic light, will debut on June 2.

The exhibition will help visitors reflect on a variety of light-related themes through a broad range of materials and artworks, including ancient sculptures, paintings, photography, textiles, and contemporary installations.

The cross-departmental exhibition is co-curated by Rebecca Hart, Vicki and Kent Logan Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Jorge Rivas Pérez, Frederick and Jan Mayer Curator of Spanish Colonial Art.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature
The Denver Art Museum will be home to the most comprehensive U.S. exhibition of Monet paintings in more than two decades. The exhibition will feature more than 100 paintings spanning Monet's entire career and will focus on the celebrated French impressionist artist's enduring relationship with nature and his response to the varied and distinct places in which he worked.

Monet traveled more extensively than any other impressionist artist in search of new motifs. His journeys to varied places including the rugged Normandy coast, the sunny Mediterranean, London, the Netherlands, and Norway inspired artworks that will be featured in the presentation. The exhibition will uncover Monet's continuous dialogue with nature and its places through a thematic and chronological arrangement, from the first examples of artworks still indebted to the landscape tradition to the revolutionary compositions and series of his late years.

The presentation of Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature will explore Monet's continuous interest in capturing the quickly changing atmospheres, the reflective qualities of water and the effects of light, aspects that increasingly led him to work on multiple canvases at once. Additionally, the exhibition will examine the critical shift in Monet's painting when he began to focus on series of the same subject, including artworks from his series of Haystacks, Poplars, Waterloo Bridge, and Water Lilies.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy.
