Claes Oldenburg with Coosje van Bruggen: Drawings
Claes Oldenburg with Coosje van Bruggen: Drawings is a survey of 40 collaborative works by contemporary artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. This exhibition presents drawings and one sculpture spanning the artists’ careers from 1961 through 2001. It offers an intriguing and insightful look at works on paper by two extraordinarily innovative modern artists well known for their monumental and imaginative sculptures, which are located in major cities throughout the world.

The exhibition presents a chronological survey of works highlighting the ingenious ways in which Oldenburg and van Bruggen appropriated and re-invented form. Beginning with studies of Oldenburg’s first and well-known monumental soft sculptures of the 1960s, Claes Oldenburg with Coosje van Bruggen: Drawings reveals a collaborative evolution of work that culminates with drafts of their large-scale hard sculptures of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The drawings represent the conception of an artistic idea, striking visual representations of manifested creations where line and form playfully intertwine the surreal and the natural elements of a landscape.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. GANESHA THE PLAYFUL PROTECTOR
Ganesha: The Playful Protector is developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, which is loaning a statue of Ganesha created in the 600s to 700s that is the centerpiece of the exhibition.

The 29-inch tall cross-legged figure, featuring human arms and an elephant head, is known as one of the earliest Ganesha icons in mainland Southeast Asia. This significant pre-Angkor artwork is on view along with sculptures, paintings, and textiles from the DAM’s own collection of ancient to modern representations of the Hindu deity.

Ganesha, who has been widely worshiped since the 400s, originated in India as a Hindu god who removes obstacles and is known for granting wealth and success. Ganesha has crossed both geographic and religious boundaries, inspiring numerous representations throughout the Asian subcontinent over time—all of which will be surveyed in the exhibition to showcase the iconographic changes of this popular god.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker
The Denver Art Museum will be the sole venue for Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker, which will showcase more than 100 prints, drawings, and paintings from Rembrandt van Rijn’s career spanning from 1625 to 1665.

Unforgettable images of biblical, portrait, allegory, still life, landscape, and genre artworks of the time demonstrate the mastery that cemented Rembrandt as one of the greatest artists in history. The exhibition will show how Rembrandt used his view of the world around him to fuel his artistic journey, and will give a deeper understanding of his working habits as an artist, and moreover, as a printmaker.

The exhibition will take a close look at Rembrandt’s innovative approach to printmaking that combined the three principle methods of intaglio, including etching, drypoint and engraving. New scholarship about the artist will be presented, revealing how Rembrandt intentionally varied the states of his prints, ink, and exotic papers to create rarities that he knew his clients desired, demonstrating how he deliberately manipulated his prints for marketing and storytelling purposes.

An exhibition catalog will be available in The Shop and online in the fall of 2018.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Dior and his Decorators
Renowned design historian Maureen Footer will share insights from her recently published book, Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and the New Look.

The first in-depth account of the two Parisian interior designers associated with Christian Dior, the book recounts the evolution of Dior’s aesthetic as a fashion revolutionary and an aficionado of interior design via his personal residences, his couture house, and the Dior brand.

Simultaneously, the story examines the intimate connection of couture and interiors, chronicling the glamorous new style of interior design that emerged in Paris in parallel with the New Look. Mining previously unexplored sources and with full access to Dior archives, Footer follows the lives and work of this influential trio.

Dior tapped Victor Grandpierre, a photojournalist, to design his first couture house at 30, avenue Montaigne. Grandpierre created not only the chic, elegantly restrained look of Dior’s salons, but also the template for the Dior brand itself—including typeface, logo, signage, and packaging—still followed to this day.

Georges Geffroy, a a former stylist at Patou and connoisseur of eighteenth-century antiques, indelibly impacted Dior's career and interiors as well.

The enduring chic of these three men—what keeps them from being mere time-capsule stylists—is rooted in their ability to fuse postwar reality and eighteenth-century inspiration in their creation of contemporary solutions.

Dior and His Decorators reminds us to this day that the past—modified, preserved, but never embalmed—is a resource to enhance the everyday.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Serious Play
Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America presents the concept of playfulness in postwar American design as a catalyst for creativity and innovation. This exhibition will explore how employing playfulness allowed designers to bring fresh ideas to the American home, children’s toys and play spaces, and corporate identities.

During the 1950s and ’60s, a number of factors came together to make this bold design innovation possible. Diverse materials and manufacturing techniques opened up possibilities for new approaches to design and larger-scale production. Larger disposable income and leisure time of a growing middle class offered more possibilities for designers to help Americans discover a new way of living at home through thoughtfully designed objects. An emerging focus on child development prompted an interest in children’s furniture and placed a fresh emphasis on the importance of smart toy design. Pervasive Cold War anxiety created a desire to bring positivity and escapism into everyday spaces. Architects and designers that took advantage of all these new opportunities thrived.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature
The Denver Art Museum will be home to the most comprehensive U.S. exhibition of Monet paintings in more than two decades. The exhibition will feature more than 100 paintings spanning Monet's entire career and will focus on the celebrated French impressionist artist's enduring relationship with nature and his response to the varied and distinct places in which he worked.

Monet traveled more extensively than any other impressionist artist in search of new motifs. His journeys to varied places including the rugged Normandy coast, the sunny Mediterranean, London, the Netherlands, and Norway inspired artworks that will be featured in the presentation. The exhibition will uncover Monet's continuous dialogue with nature and its places through a thematic and chronological arrangement, from the first examples of artworks still indebted to the landscape tradition to the revolutionary compositions and series of his late years.

The presentation of Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature will explore Monet's continuous interest in capturing the quickly changing atmospheres, the reflective qualities of water and the effects of light, aspects that increasingly led him to work on multiple canvases at once. Additionally, the exhibition will examine the critical shift in Monet's painting when he began to focus on series of the same subject, including artworks from his series of Haystacks, Poplars, Waterloo Bridge, and Water Lilies.
100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy.
