ZOOM IN: THE CENTENNIAL STATE IN 100 OBJECTS
A hundred objects. A hundred portals to the past.

Presented by Colorado State University

Our newest exhibition has 100 stories to tell. Zoom in on 100 powerful artifacts to see how Colorado became Colorado. Culled from the vast collections of History Colorado, every object on view had a role in shaping our state—from the age of the Paleoindians to Jack Swigert’s Apollo 13 flight suit and beyond.

You could never distill Colorado’s rich history into only 100 objects. But the ones we’ve selected, both ordinary and extraordinary, combine into a telling mosaic of the past—and, just maybe, a glimpse into our future.

A brand-new space, the Tim Schultz Gallery presented by the Boettcher Foundation, has been created on the museum’s third floor to house the innovative 3,700-square-foot experience. The addition of Zoom In provides another core exhibit for museum visitors to explore. The exhibition joins core exhibits such as Living West, Destination Colorado, and Colorado Stories, giving museum goers a full dose of historically themed exhibits about the state’s past.
1200 Broadway Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Denver's Own Saint
A freed slave, a devout Christian, and selfless giver, Julia Greeley had an enormous impact on early Denver. Ms. Greeley came to Colorado in 1878-79 as a servant to ex-governor William Gilpin. She would eventually spend almost every day at the Sacred Heart parish on Larimer Street. J

ulia Greeley is not remembered for fame or fortune, but for her generosity and kindness towards her fellow humans. All her deeds were done with such humbleness, it was as if they were done in secret. Join Father Blaine Burkey, author of In Secret Service of the Sacred Heart, as he presents a lecture highlighting Ms. Greeley’s influence, triumphs and life in Denver.
1200 Broadway Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

The First Ascent
The Southern Rockies are known for their jagged peaks and abundant wildlife. While many think of this alpine country as remote wilderness, archaeological research provides a different narrative.

More than 2,000 prehistoric Colorado sites are known at elevations higher than 3,000 meters. This demonstrates that the highlands—rather than being a barrier—played a significant role in the lives of ancient Native Americans. Dr. Jason LaBelle of Colorado State University gives an overview of the alpine archaeology of Colorado, focusing on hunting sites and other key places, proposing reasons for their construction and use over millennia, and arguing for the importance of these places then and now.
1200 Broadway Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

The Utes
The Utes long dominated the landscape of what is now eastern Utah and western Colorado. The tribes have a rich history of adaptation and persistence in a region that could otherwise be harsh. Their timeless culture and relationship to the land is evident today within the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, and the Ute Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. Join Ernest House, Jr., executive director of the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs and great-grandson of Chief Jack House, the last hereditary chief of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, as he makes connections between the past and contemporary life and culture of Colorado’s oldest continuous residents.
1200 Broadway Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Colorado Then & Now
Grant Collier has been following—literally—in the footsteps of his great-great-grandfather, the pioneer photographer Joseph Collier. He has traveled throughout Colorado taking photographs from the exact same spots where Joseph captured his images over a century before. Grant released his first book of images from this project, Colorado: Yesterday & Today, in 2001. He recently released a sequel to that book, Colorado Then & Now.

Grant will present a slideshow of images from this new book, and will discuss the challenges both he and Joseph Collier faced when capturing these images. He’ll explain the history behind many of the images while discussing both successful and unsuccessful attempts at historic preservation throughout the state.
1200 Broadway Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center
