Read Out Loud Session 1
MCA Denver is excited to host Read Out Loud at the museum in conjunction with The Stacks exhibition in the Open Shelf Library. Read Out Loud, originated by Caryn Keffer, creates a free forum in which participants read something—anything—of their choice out loud. The program riffs on children’s story time, poetry readings, and book talks. Read Out Loud differs from these events, however, in its democratic nature. All attendees read, and all readers listen. Without rules or a predetermined reading order, participants govern each session themselves. Sometimes readers introduce or explain their chosen material, and sometimes participants engage with one another in discussions about readings. The variety of material shared at each session, the changing roster of readers, and the non-hierarchical nature of the gatherings ensure that every Read Out Loud is unique.

We will host 5 different sessions throughout the summer and welcome 20 participants at each session. To allow everyone who is interested in attending Read Out Loud the chance to do so, we ask that you only register for one of the dates listed below. You must register in order to participate (registration is free). You will receive an email confirming your registration with additional details about the program.
America/North_Dakota/Center

Exhibition Talk with Wall Writers
Roger Gastman, Wall Writers curator and author of the book of the same name, hosts a conversation about the roots of graffiti, including the folklore that surrounds its 1960s origins in NYC and Philadelphia, including when TAKI 183 appeared in headlines in the NY TIMES and when CORNBREAD wrote on an elephant at the Philadelphia Zoo. Gastman is joined by Mike Giant and other special guests. Join us in the café prior to the talk for a book signing.

Members: $5 | Nonmembers: $10

Roger Gastman is a collector, curator, graffiti historian and urban anthropologist. He started writing graffiti as a teenager in Bethesda, Maryland. He later founded and co-published Swindle magazine. Gastman has been involved in several critically acclaimed documentaries, including Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop (which earned an Academy Award nomination for best documentary) and he directed the upcoming documentary WALL WRITERS.

Mike Giant was born in upstate New York and began drawing as soon as he could hold a crayon. Mike as had been involved in street and skate culture since he was a teenager, including writing graffiti under the name “Giant,” designing at Think Skateboards in San Francisco, working as a tattoo artist at East Side Ink, Newskool and Everlasting, and founding REBEL8, a clothing brand. He currently lives and works in Boulder.
America/North_Dakota/Center

Dance Party with The Egyptian Lover
Wall Writers is closing with a bang. Get ready to pop, lock, and break to hip-hop/electro fusion legend, the one, the only, king of the 808, Egyptian Lover.

Members $10 | Nonmembers $15 | Day of Show/Door $20

The Egyptian Lover started out as a D.J. in Los Angeles with Uncle Jamms Army doing dances at the L.A. Sports Arena. He began recording around Los Angeles in 1982 as a member of the Radio Crew. In the early days of hip hop, albums were rare, so most of The Egyptian Lover's successful recordings were 12" singles. He would eventually release some of the earliest rap LPs, which was especially unique for being west-coast based, but they were less popular than his singles. But on the strength of containing an alternate mix of his most popular single "Egypt, Egypt", 1984's On the Nile was moderately successful. After a break in the early 1990s, Egyptian Lover returned in 1994 with "Back from the Tomb". His last full-length album in over ten years. Since then he has made "Platinum Pyramids" and "Electro Pharoh" (Digital MP3) and is now working on a New Album entitled "1984" due to be released in 2011.
America/North_Dakota/Center

Wall Writers Film Screening & Book Signing with Roger Gastman
Join us for a screening of the Wall Writers film as we close the Wall Writers exhibition and celebrate the birth of graffiti.

DFS & MCA Members: $12 | Nonmembers: $15

Before artists such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey became household names, there were graffiti pioneers who were responsible for adding such things as the first ever crown or arrow to their moniker beginning the evolution of style.

Wall Writers: Graffiti in its Innocence is a documentary film and 350+ page companion book. Both film and book were conceived and directed by Roger Gastman. Legendary filmmaker John Waters narrates the documentary and the book’s forward is written by acclaimed artist Barry McGee.

Graffiti and street art today are largely considered the rock n’ roll of visual art, and Wall Writers is the story of its birth from Philadelphia and New York City during 1967 to 1973. Wall Writers is an exclusive account of the beginnings of the largest art movement of the Twentieth Century. No one has been able to tell this story until now, because no one could get complete access to the full cast of the movement’s originators featured in this film. Most of these artists have given their first ever on-camera interviews for this project. Wall Writers offers a once-in-a-lifetime look at the origin of graffiti and street art that continues to capture the imaginations of young people the world over.

Wall Writers explores graffiti’s eruption into the mainstream society during a period of social turmoil in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, and takes a closer look not only at early graffiti’s place on the wall but its place in the culture of the time. Featuring unprecedented access to and exclusive interviews with graffiti’s originators CORNBREAD, TAKI 183, LSD OM, and more than a two-dozen others.Testimonies from journalists, historians and politicians who bore witness to the wall-writing revolution are also included in the film.
America/North_Dakota/Center
