DERRICK VELASQUEZ - OBSTRUCTED VIEW
For his exhibition at MCA Denver, Derrick Velasquez created two site-specific installations and a series of photographs that use the museum’s architecture and the broader politics of design and urban development. His work features sculptural installation, composed of prefabricated ornate crown molding that adorns the opening into the lower-level gallery of the museum’s David Adjaye building. Velasquez installs these decorative features upside down to call new attention to them. Below the embellished atrium, in the Whole Room Gallery, Velasquez has created a modular sculpture that resembles a Greek key. Photographs of residential property lines in Denver comprise the rest of the gallery, depicting new construction, historic architecture, and barriers that divide or connect new and old buildings.

Obstructed View explores liminal areas in the museum’s building and in Denver, as well as more figurative borders between art, design, and architecture. Obstructed View coincides with the presentation of The Stacks, an exhibition curated by Velasquez currently on view in the Open Shelf Library.

Derrick Velasquez was born in 1982 in Lodi, California. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts and Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2004, Velasquez received an MFA from The Ohio State University. Velasquez has taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder and University of Denver, and he has been an Affiliate Instructor at Metropolitan State University in Denver since 2010. He is the founding director and curator of Yes Ma’am Projects. He is represented by Pentimenti Gallery, in Philadelphia, and Robischon Gallery, in Denver, where he lives and works.

The exhibition is curated by Zoe Larkins.
America/North_Dakota/Center

JENNY MORGAN - SKINDEEP
Jenny Morgan: SKINDEEP surveys the past decade of her painting career. The exhibition traces the development of Morgan’s distinctive style from traditional portraits made while she was in graduate school to recent works featuring bright, unconventional colors. It will also include the illustrative paintings of celebrity subjects that were commissioned for major American news publications, as well as more personal works for which the artist is best known. SKINDEEP emphasizes Morgan’s abilities as a formalist as much as it showcases her preternatural talent for realistic figuration.

The exhibition will occupy MCA Denver’s first floor galleries during the summer months. Works from 2007-2009 that exemplify Morgan’s realistic portraiture occupy the first half of the David & Laura Merage Foundation Gallery, as well as works from the same period that showcase early formal experiments she made within the framework of portraiture. In the second half of the Merage Gallery are works that demonstrate the spiritual aspect of Morgan’s practice. The Atrium Gallery features five of Morgan’s paintings of celebrities, which together serve as a counterpoint to the rest of the works in the exhibition. The Luisa & Chris Law Gallery is dedicated to Morgan’s confrontational self-portraits.

Jenny Morgan was born in 1982 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She earned a BFA from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Lakewood, Colorado, in 2003, graduating as the valedictorian of her class. She received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2008. Her work has been included in exhibitions across the US, as well as in London and Sweden. She is represented by Driscoll Babcock Galleries in New York and Plus Gallery in Denver. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a 52-page, full-color catalogue, published by MCA Denver.

The exhibition is curated by Zoe Larkins.
America/North_Dakota/Center

Read Out Loud Session 5
MCA Denver is excited to host Read Out Loud at the museum in conjunction with The Stacks exhibition in the Open Shelf Library. Read Out Loud, originated by Caryn Keffer, creates a free forum in which participants read something—anything—of their choice out loud. The program riffs on children’s story time, poetry readings, and book talks. Read Out Loud differs from these events, however, in its democratic nature. All attendees read, and all readers listen. Without rules or a predetermined reading order, participants govern each session themselves. Sometimes readers introduce or explain their chosen material, and sometimes participants engage with one another in discussions about readings. The variety of material shared at each session, the changing roster of readers, and the non-hierarchical nature of the gatherings ensure that every Read Out Loud is unique.

We will host 5 different sessions throughout the summer and welcome 20 participants at each session. To allow everyone who is interested in attending Read Out Loud the chance to do so, we ask that you only register for one of the dates listed below. You must register in order to participate (registration is free). You will receive an email confirming your registration with additional details about the program.
America/North_Dakota/Center
