McNichols Civic Center Building, Denver Arts & Venues

Details

The McNichols Civic Center Building is located in the heart of downtown Denver at the northwest corner of Civic Center Park. In 1909, the cornerstone of the building was laid, setting the foundation for the then Carnegie Library that would become a center of learning in the park. That tradition continues, as the building was reopened in 2012 as a contemporary hub for arts, culture and events for the people of Denver. This stunning Greek Revival building with its classic Corinthian columns and iconic colonnade across its front, offers new experiences in a classic space.

Etlelooaat (Cree) - He who shouts
Contemporary multi-disciplinary artist Merritt Johnson, a descendant of the Blackfoot and Kanienkehaka Tribes, writes that most people think of "beads and feathers" when they hear the term "Native American art." Artspace writer Jillian Billard adds, "This pigeonholing, among being immensely generalized and demeaning, fails to acknowledge the unique individual expression between and within Native American communities. There are 567 federally recognized Native American nations in the United States. Amongst those tribes exists a great deal of diversity in culture, language, and elements of day-to-day life. Merging Native American cultures disregards this diversity, and effectually silences American Indian voices." This exhibit reflects the dynamic nature of Native American creativity and the changing realities of life and culture across the Americas. Featured artists include Neal Ambrose-Smith (Salish/Kootenai), Alistair Bane (Shawnee), Jeff Kahm (Plains Cree) and Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo) in collaboration with Emilio Lobato, all working in a variety of styles and media. There is an opportunity to hear diversity in Native American voices if we are willing to listen.
144 W. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Giving Voice: Posters with a Message from Teens with Disabilities
Giving Voice is a partnership between Access Gallery and professional graphic designers from the greater Denver Metro Area. The program is designed to empower teens living with disabilities to give voice to a social cause that's important to them. Working with professional graphic design mentors, the teens share their views on a significant cause and in partnership, they work to develop and produce a graphic image that captures their views and commitment to critical social issues. This collaborative model has received national attention and has inspired other states from Texas to New York. This exhibition highlights 40 posters from the past ten years of the program, and subjects range from addiction to hunger, school bullying to suicide prevention, and from immigration to climate change.
Boettcher Cultural Pavilion, 2nd Flor Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center
