Moderno Afro-Cubano Quintet
Moderno returns for a second Latin Jazz residence at Nocturne. The group’s first residence, three years ago, laid a foundation of music from many Afro-Caribbean traditions and the ways that they have blended and cross-inspired with jazz. Moderno’s repertoire of Latin Jazz classics still provides a foundation for each show, but now the group is taking a step forward and bringing new music to the tradition. This residence will feature new compositions and arrangements by the band’s members — each one offering new colors and new challenges for Moderno’s outstanding soloists. In addition to original material, the band will feature music from contemporary masters, such as Miguel Zenon, Paquito D’Rivera, and John Benitez. As Moderno combines all these elements in its shows, from classics to brand-new material, the audience becomes a participant in the variety, energy, and beauty that is Afro-Caribbean Jazz.

Jeremy Wendelin - woodwinds
Derech Banach - trumpet
Pete Ellingson - piano
Jon Cullison - bass
Manuel Lopez - drums
1330 27th St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

He graduated from Texas State University in 2001 and performed extensively as a sideman in Austin, Houston and San Antonio before forming his own band. A year later, he followed-up with Deep Down, an album of ballads and blues.

In 2003, Killian formed Com Você with vocalist Margret Grebowicz - the resulting work produced a 2005 release entitled Candeias for the French record label Nocturne and an opening act slot for Zé Renato on his first American solo tour. In 2006, Killian moved to the east coast, ultimately ending up in Brooklyn.

In 2011, he released his first record for Sunnyside Records called Unified, which featured his working Quartet plus guests Roy Hargrove, David Binney and Jeremy Pelt. Swing Je T'aime Gypsy Jazz
Swing Je T'aime is a gypsy jazz ensemble based in Denver, Colorado and founded by composer and Gypsy jazz guitarist Aaron Walker in 2009. The band produces a uniquely entertaining blend of Gypsy, Swing, Classical, Jazz, and various forms of World/Folk music.

The performers involved are all in-demand professional musicians with advanced degrees in their craft. At its inception, Swing Je T'aime was strongly influenced by the late Django Reinhardt's Hot Club of France. While the Gypsy threads remain bright, the overall tapestry of the group's shows has grown to include many complementary styles. The main ideal which backs this endeavor and guides the music choices is Aaron's deep feeling that entertainers are meant to entertain, and truly excellent music is timelessly accessible to all. The goal of Swing Je T'aime is to create artistically fine music which serves its audience.

1330 27th St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center
