Under the Western Sun
UNDER THE WESTERN SUN is the Studio Art Quilters Association’s (SAQA) regional juried challenge featuring Western quilt art by Western artists. Where an artist lives impacts the voice with which they speak, here in the West we experience extremes of climate and altitude; intense color and light, unusual landscapes and plants; unique people and cultures. These all influence the work we do Under the Western Sun. Under the Western Sun is curated by Bev Haring & Barb Beasley.

The Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation and publications. The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum is delighted to host this intriguing exhibit from juried SAQA regional member submissions.

RMQM Presents BUFFALO BILL: QUILTING THE WILD WEST, in collaboration with the Buffalo Bill Museum, was an open invitation to all quilters and fiber artists to create a quilt commemorating Buffalo Bill Cody and the Wild West. This exhibit celebrates the life of Buffalo Bill Cody and the 100th anniversary of his death. The exhibit was juried by Steve Friesen, Executive Director of the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave in Golden, CO.

America/North_Dakota/Center

RMQM's Exhibit: AQSG's "Civil War Era Quilts" & "Pagtinabangay: Quilts of Caohagan Island"
AQSG'S CIVIL WAR ERA QUILTS is the result of an American Quilt Study Group quilt study completed in 2014 which resulted in a collection of reproduction Civil War Quilts defined as quilts made between the years 1850-1865. It was up to each participant to determine their own construction methods for their projects based upon information available about the original quilt. The Study Quilts were limited to a 200” perimeter. This exhibit is curated by Joy Swartz.

RMQM presents PAGTINABANGAY: QUILTS OF CAOHAGAN ISLAND, an exhibit of quilts that were all made by some of the 100 quilters on the tiny island of Caohagan in the Philippines. Part of a seven-island atoll, Caohagan is home to just 600 permanent residents. The quilters work daily to produce quilts that are sold abroad. The income from quilt sales makes up 1/3 of the entire revenue of the island and is an integral part of the island’s economy.

Distinctive is an apt descriptor for the quilts of Caohagan Island. The colors and patterns evoke the tropical environs, while the handicraft is of the highest caliber. The results are quilts that evoke a far-away place but retain a human touch to which anyone who views them can relate. This exhibit is curated by author and quilter Dana Jones.
America/North_Dakota/Center
