Denver is a city of many colors and cultures with a long ethnic history. This diversity is celebrated in a number of museums, attractions and events.

BLACK AMERICAN WEST MUSEUM

This Black American West Museum preserves the history and culture of those African American men and women who helped settle and develop the American West. Located in the former home of Dr. Justina Ford, the first Black woman doctor in Denver.

MUSEO DE LAS AMERICAS

The Museo de las Americas is the only museum in the Rocky Mountain Region focusing on the art, history, and culture of Latinos in the Americas from ancient times to the present. See beautiful Spanish Colonial art from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Pre-Columbian objects, contemporary works and much more!

MIZEL MUSEUM

The Mizel Museum presents the continuum of Jewish culture through exhibits and educational programs, promoting peace through the arts.

CINCO DE MAYO

This festival is noted as one of the largest cultural events in Colorado, with more than 400,000 visitors each year. Live cultural entertainment on three stages, hundreds of exhibitors, great food and drink, children's activities, parade, green chili cook-off, special sponsor exhibits and more! Cinco de Mayo is fun for the whole family.

DENVER ART MUSEUM: INDIGENOUS ART COLLECTION

From intricately carved wooden masks to a stunning rug woven from six miles of yarn, the Denver Art Museum's Indigenous art collection includes more than 18,000 art objects representing the heritage of all cultures and tribes across the United States and Canada. Recognized as one of the best of its kind in the United States, the collection spans more than 2,000 years of artistic creativity, from prehistoric times to the present, including Pueblo ceramics, Navajo textiles, Northwest Coast sculpture, basketry, Plains beadwork, and oil paintings, representing the full range of American Indian art styles. Keep an eye on the Museum's events calendar: The Native Arts Department periodically brings Native American artists to the museum to speak about their art, and sponsors an annual Friendship Powwow each September. 

OKTOBERFEST DENVER

Held over two weekends in September, and modeled after Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, this family-friendly fest commemorates this world-famous and time-honored tradition of German heritage. Enjoy German attractions including music from national touring groups, performances by international dancers, children's activities, and heritage booths selling German goods, splendid decor, an accordion concert and authentic drinks and cuisine.

COLORADO DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Held every July, The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival (CDBF) is a free family-friendly festival highlighting Colorado's rich Asian Pacific American heritage at Sloan's Lake Park in northwest Denver. A window to the Pan Asian world, this diverse festival is the only one of its kind in the United States. It showcases an array of traditional and contemporary performing arts, cultural customs, cuisine and a marketplace of unique and hard-to-find arts, crafts and vendors, in addition to two days of action-packed dragon boat racing.

NATIVE AMERICAN TRADING COMPANY

For more than 25 years, the Native American Trading Company has offered high quality affordable and authentic handmade Indian art. Every piece is individually selected by owners Jack Lima and Robin Lima Riddel, who frequently make trips to reservations, pueblos, and the homes of the artists in search of the finest pieces, including antique weavings, pottery, baskets, jewelry, artifacts, and photographs. Located just across the street from the Denver Art Museum, Native American Trading Company is a must-visit gallery.

DENVER MARCH POWWOW

Since 1984, the heritage of American Indians has been celebrated in Denver every March at the Denver March Powwow, one of the largest events of its kind in the country. A welcoming glimpse into Native American culture, more than 1,600 dancers from close to 100 tribes from 38 states and three Canadian provinces come to the three-day event, filling the Denver Coliseum with singing, dancing, storytelling, food, art. There are also more than 170 booths selling a variety of American Indian artworks and products. Buy jewelry and blankets, pottery and beadwork from some of the nation's most skilled Indian craftsman. Try American Indian foods such as fry bread and Indian tacos or buy an authentic Cheyenne arrow or a Sioux tomahawk.
