About the Exhibition
To engage early learners and their families, the museum’s first four galleries chart the artistic journey of Clyfford Still in chronological order. Artworks are selected with families and children in mind and hung lower on the walls to account for the height of young visitors. The remaining galleries feature Clyfford Still, Art, and the Young Mind, the first show the Clyfford Still Museum has curated in collaboration with the community.
Co-curated with children across the Front Range from six months old to age eight, Clyfford Still, Art, and the Young Mind reveals how children think about art. The museum’s curatorial and education staff worked with young children and teachers from partner schools on every level of the exhibition. Museum cocurators organized the show into five gallery themes: High Contrast, Scale, Pattern, The World Around Us and Color. The themes correspond with key developmental stages researchers have identified based on children’s preferences. Local children selected and arranged their favorite artworks; shared their perspectives for the gallery and audio content; and helped design interactive activities.
Discover a variety of interactive features inspired by the exhibition’s young co-curators. Play and experiment with an art projection activity using materials on lightboxes; interact with shadows; and immerse yourself in Still-inspired creations on a gallery wall. Watch a behind-the-scenes video with clips of infant co-curators selecting paintings by staring, pointing, vocalizing and grabbing reproductions of their favorite paintings. Enjoy the perspectives of young co-curators in English, Spanish or American Sign Language in the galleries. Relax on the museum’s tranquil outdoor terraces and experience installations of prisms and mirrors.
Make art with a variety of materials in the newly reopened hands-on art studio, “The Making Space.” Deepen your appreciation of the works on view through directed activities, or experiment with art materials to try something new.
