Highlights from the Collection (Early 2019)
Clyfford Still & Photography is surrounded by a new display of the permanent collection installed throughout all of the Lanny and Sharon Martin Galleries. Spanning the artist's 60-year career, this presentation features approximately 35 paintings, 35 works on paper, and a sculpture by Still. The mostly chronological narrative begins in the 1920s with traditional landscape subjects and Depression-era figure studies that transform into quasi-abstractions. These culminate with Still's groundbreaking wartime abstractions and monumental late paintings that show the artist at the height of his powers.
1250 Bannock St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

One Photograph at a Time: Dean Sobel
Join Clyfford Still Museum director Dean Sobel at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center for a program that challenges participants to look beyond their first impression and spend quality time with a single work of art.

As director of the Clyfford Still Museum, Dean Sobel spearheaded the efforts to create a permanent home for the Clyfford Still Estate, encompassing approximately 3,200 works of art by Still that were donated to the City of Denver in 2004. From 2000 to 2005, Sobel was Director of the Aspen Art Museum, a non-collecting kunsthalle. During his tenure, Sobel led the institution through its accreditation process and developed museum goals and programs for its 25th anniversary, including an ambitious presentation of site-specific installations presented around Aspen. Prior to this appointment, from 1995–2000, Sobel was Chief Curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where he held the joint position of Curator of Contemporary Art.

*Registration required
1250 Bannock St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Art and Architecture: Brutalism Tamed
In the early 1950s, a group of British architects championed an architectural style they identified as Brutalism and introduced the term to the English-speaking world. Brutalism often entailed unabashedly expressed raw-concrete construction. By the 1980s, Brutalist architecture was no longer popular but in recent years has enjoyed renewed interest, with an emphasis on the its visceral qualities. This “tamed” Brutalism, as applied to the Clyfford Still Museum, will be the topic of the evening’s lecture.

Bob Nauman received dual Master’s degrees in music and art history before completing his Ph.D. in art and architectural history at the University of New Mexico. He teaches in the Department of Art and Art History at CU–Boulder, where his research focuses on art and architectural history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Dr. Nauman is the author of several books, chapters, and articles on contemporary art and architecture.
1250 Bannock St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center
