You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. Wildflower Wednesday
Sometimes we need a quiet stroll among the wildflowers—without hours of driving and hiking! Denver Botanic Gardens has hundreds of native wildflowers right here onsite to enjoy. The recent release of the Gardens’ book “Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains,” authored by the experts of our own Horticulture Department, has renewed interest in knowing and growing our best native plants.

On the third Wednesday of every month (April – October) wander with one of these authors through our acres of naturalistic gardens to see which wildflowers are at their peak. Since many bloom at Denver’s elevation before they bloom in the mountains, seeing them here first can help you learn what to look for, where and when.
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Cherokee Summer Nature Hike
Those lucky enough to have hiked Cherokee Ranch know that there are a wealth of habitats and a rich flora that distract your eyes downwards, even as the vistas of the rugged backbone of the Rockies and distant misty towers of downtown Denver tempt you to look further away. One thing is for sure—you will never be bored on a Cherokee hike! This year we are starting much earlier—for better birding. But the plants will already be awake!

At the beginning of Summer the grasses have greened up, although there may still be snow on the higher peaks, when we walk through meadows full of the bounty of early summer this is the peak season for many of the loveliest wildflowers; including One-sided Penstemon (Penstemon virgatus), lupines and Monument plant. It is also peak season for the Broad-tailed Hummingbirds that have made their way back from Mexico and Central America to nest at Cherokee. We will learn how to identify the male Broad-tailed Hummingbird just by hearing it fly as it darts between scarlet gilia trumpets. Two species of bluebirds and swallows will be active at this time as well as the tiny (4 ½ in) Blue-gray Gnatcatcher that has returned from its winter grounds as far away as Central America to nest at Cherokee. Summer is prime time for viewing the plant and bird life at Cherokee, folks!
6113 N Daniels Park RD Sedalia, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Wild Wednesday Hikes - Subalpine
Spend the morning with a guide learning about Colorado's subalpine life zone and searching for wildflowers. Lake Isabelle is situated at 11,000 feet in the heart of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Framed by Navajo, Apache, and Shoshoni peaks, this beautiful lake offers some of the most spectacular mountain scenery close to the front range. Just as spectacular are the abundant wildflowers along the trail and surrounding the lake. Along the way, the trail moves through subalpine forest of spruce and fir, crosses several wildflower-bordered streams, and eventually opens up to wide subalpine meadows surrounding the lake. Stands of bluebells, Penstemon, Erigeron, Paintbrush and Pedicularis will keep us busy on the 4.1 mile hike up to the lake.

This hike will take place at moderately high elevation, from 10,500 to 11,000 feet so be aware you may be short of breath and experience altitude-related fatigue at this elevation!
1334 Brainard Lake Road Ward, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

In the mid-'70s McDonald was invited to join the Doobie Brothers as the band redefined their sound with McDonald serving as singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as "Takin' It To The Streets," "It Keeps You Runnin'," "Minute By Minute" and "What A Fool Believes." Throughout the '80s and '90s McDonald's solo career took off with a string of hits including "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)," "Sweet Freedom," "On My Own" (with Patti LaBelle) and the Grammy-winning James Ingram duet "Yah Mo B There," plus he co-wrote the Van Halen hit "I'll Wait." McDonald has performed with a who's-who of critically acclaimed artists across a number of genres, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Vince Gill and Grizzly Bear.
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Gipsy Kings
It has been twenty-five years since the Gipsy Kings captured the world's imagination with their self-titled debut album—a record that became a genuine phenomenon, certified gold and platinum around the globe, introducing millions of listeners to a unique, irresistible blend of traditional flamenco styles with Western pop and Latin rhythms. Since then, the band has toured virtually non-stop, to the farthest-flung corners of the planet, and sold almost twenty million albums, all the while retaining the same line-up of virtuoso musicians.

Now the Gipsy Kings return with SAVOR FLAMENCO, their ninth studio album and first new release in six years. The project marks the first time in their storied career that the Kings have produced themselves and written all of the material. It also starts a relationship between France's most successful musical group of all time and a new label, Knitting Factory Records.
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Double Vision Revisited featuring Bob James, David Sanborn & Marcus Miller
A jazz legend, Bob James has a career that has defined the genre and continues to evolve at every turn. David Sanborn is universally known as one of the most iconic saxophonists of the current age. Marcus Miller's characteristic bass sound can be heard on a limitless catalog of musical hits. Together, these three virtuosos reunite for the first time since the release of Double Vision, the 80s collaboration between James and Sanborn that dominated the airwaves, sold over one million copies, and earned a GRAMMY Award. Featuring the renowned track "Maputo," written by Marcus Miller, and the classic standard "Since I Fell For You" with guest vocalist Al Jarreau, Double Vision is considered by many as one of the most successful albums in the jazz genre.

Adding in the talents of featured guests Billy Kilson (drums) and Larry Braggs (guest vocals), the Double Vision Revisited band is a thrilling return to the classic sound of the famous album. The resulting program presents tunes capable of both amazing new listeners and enthralling long-term fans, showing audiences the world over the true magic of a good groove.
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

JJ Grey & Mofro and Johnny Lang
From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. When you see JJ Grey and his band Mofro live—and you truly, absolutely must—the man is fearless.

It is hard to believe that at 36 years old Jonny Lang has already had a successful career for two decades.

Easier to believe when you learn he released his first platinum record at 15—an age when many young people are just beginning to play music. Lie to Me revealed a talent that transcended the crop of blues prodigies floating around in the late Nineties. No flashy re-hasher of classic blues licks, even at that early age Lang was a full-blown artist with a style of his own. Also, setting Lang apart from the wunderkind crowd was a 15-year-old voice that sounded like a weathered soul shouter. Actual life experience was yet to come, and has been subsequently chronicled in a series of five uniformly excellent recordings. "I got married, had kids, and that arc has been recorded on albums along the way," says Lang. "There is a lot of personal history in there, and also some things that relate to world events."
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Cherokee Late Summer Nature Hike
Those lucky enough to have hiked Cherokee Ranch know that there are a wealth of habitats and a rich flora that distract your eyes downwards, even as the vistas of the rugged backbone of the Rockies and distant misty towers of downtown Denver tempt you to look further away.

Late summer is an excellent time to observe the bounty of both flora and fauna rolling through the hills of Cherokee Ranch: Aster and Goldenrod are everywhere. Blazing star paints purple spikes in the tousled mats of buffalo grass. Mid- summer bird activity continues at Cherokee as well. It is possible to see three species of hummingbirds as they stop to feed to store up energy on their way to Central America for the winter. The Mountain and Western Bluebirds have finished nesting and the young (juveniles) are seen throughout the Ranch property. There is no better place to soak up the sun than on a late summer plant hike and bird watching adventure at Cherokee Ranch.
6113 N Daniels Park RD Sedalia, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Judy Collins
Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Lecture - Maya Medicine
In Mexican villages it’s common to hear the only remaining herbalist or midwife state that they are the last one in their village still practicing their art and working with plants. Most don’t have apprentices and almost never does the younger generation choose to carry on their ancestral healing traditions. It is the elders who are sought to share their medicine knowledge.

José Feliciano Ake Kinil is an exception. He is a third-generation, young-but-practiced Maya healer and student who has made it his life’s work to follow the rich traditions of the medicine people, herbalists and healers of the Yucatan. José shares specific information on the ethnobotanical uses of plants of the Yucatan peninsula, stories of growing up in a Maya family that never lost these traditions and what it has been like to follow the life path that he has chosen—or as the elders say, the life path that has chosen him.

This is a unique perspective that has not been shared before.
1007 York St. Denver, CO America/North_Dakota/Center

Cherokee Winter Nature Tour
Those lucky enough to have hiked Cherokee Ranch know that there are a wealth of habitats and a rich flora that distract your eyes downwards, even as the vistas of the rugged backbone of the Rockies and distant misty towers of downtown Denver tempt you to look further away.

Whoever says winter is the “dormant” season? Wise naturalists know that nature does not sleep, you can now SEE those birds flitting in the bare branches. Buds are set on everything, and there is much more than just bark, branches and berries to liven a walk. You can see two species of Chickadees and Nuthatches that never stop in their search for food and there are a few last lingering hints of flowers. You will be surprised at how many evergreens there really are; not just pines and junipers and Oregon Grape, but many of our native shrubs and forbs keep living foliage and rosettes through the winter: they are still hard at work chlorophyll pumping! You might also be surprised to know that some Dark-eyed Juncos fly all the way from the Pacific Northwest and even Canada to winter at Cherokee. Other winter species include Flicker, Woodpeckers and a resident Red-tailed Hawk. What better time and place than Cherokee Ranch in the bright, winter light.
6113 Daniels Park Rd Sedalia, CO America/North_Dakota/Center
