Civil War hero and railroad magnate Gen. William J. Palmer saw the potential of creating a city at the foot of towering Pikes Peak in 1871 and others have agreed, making it Colorado’s second-largest community. Attractions like Garden of the Gods, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Olympic Training Center, The Broadmoor’s Seven Falls and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo keep all ages busy and happy, and there are great options for overnight stays ranging from full-service resorts (including a AAA Five Diamond gem) to cabins and bed and breakfasts. Nearby are the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park and the town of Manitou Springs, where you can try eight mineral springs and, if you dare, traverse the Manitou Incline.
A quick 60 mile drive straight down I-25 gets you from Denver to Colorado Springs to enjoy the sights.
